Cylindrical roller bearings feature tapered inner and outer rings with conical raceways, between which tapered rollers are arranged. These bearings are primarily designed to handle combined radial and axial loads, with radial loads being the predominant force. Notably, the inner components of the bearing can be separated from the outer ring, making installation and removal significantly easier. The bearing’s axial load-carrying capacity is determined by the contact angle ‘a’—the larger the angle ‘a’, the greater the axial load-handling capability. This type of bearing is widely used in applications such as automobiles, transmissions, machine tool spindles, construction machinery, railway vehicles, and roll necks in steel rolling mills.
The curvature center of the raceway surface in a self-aligning roller bearing coincides with the bearing's center, giving it excellent self-aligning capabilities. When the shaft or housing experiences deflection, the bearing can automatically adjust without placing additional stress on itself. It is designed to handle both radial loads and bidirectional axial loads, offering high radial load capacity—making it ideal for applications involving heavy-duty and shock-loading conditions. These bearings are widely used in large-scale mechanical equipment across industries such as metallurgy, mining, petroleum, paper production, and construction.
Ball bearings include deep groove ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings, thrust ball bearings, and several other types. Angular contact ball bearings come in a variety of designs: single-row versions can handle radial loads as well as unidirectional axial loads. DB and DF combinations form four-point contact, while double-row angular contact ball bearings are capable of supporting both radial and bidirectional axial loads. These angular contact ball bearings are ideal for high-speed and high-precision applications. They are commonly used in machine tool spindles, high-frequency motors, oil pumps, air compressors, printing machines, and more. Notably, four-point angular contact ball bearings are often employed in rolling mill applications to support the rolls, effectively handling axial loads.
Thrust roller bearings are used on rolling mill rolls to withstand axial loads. Compared to thrust ball bearings, double-row, bidirectional tapered roller bearings offer significantly higher axial load-carrying capacity, greater rigidity, and require less axial space. These bearings are ideally suited for low-speed applications and are commonly employed in the axial positioning of steel-rolling mill rolls, where they effectively handle bidirectional axial loads. This type of bearing comes in two main designs: one features a spacer ring for adjusting axial clearance, while the other uses spring-loaded preloading mechanisms—eliminating the need for a spacer ring altogether. Additionally, there’s the double-row, bidirectional thrust cylindrical roller bearing, which can accommodate axial loads from both directions, making it perfect for high-load scenarios with exceptional axial stiffness. It utilizes a machined steel alloy cage to enhance performance. Lastly, the thrust self-aligning roller bearing features spherical rollers and a correspondingly spherical raceway on the housing, enabling automatic alignment under misalignment conditions. These bearings boast an exceptionally high axial load-carrying capacity, allowing them to handle not only pure axial loads but also up to 55% of radial loads simultaneously. As a result, they are highly tolerant of shaft misalignment and minimal shaft deflection. Such bearings find widespread use in applications like hydroelectric generators, vertical motors, marine propellers, tower cranes, and plastic injection molding extruders.
Back-up bearings (for Sendzimir mills) are widely used in multi-roll cold rolling mills, featuring a thick outer ring wall. Their advantages include a simple geometric design, high manufacturing precision, and superior radial load-carrying capacity. Most commonly employed in multi-roll cold mills that roll stainless steel and silicon steel strips, these bearings have recently seen expanded applications—thanks to the growing popularity of eight-roll mills—in supporting rolls of general-purpose wide and thin-plate rolling mills, thus broadening the scope of Sendzimir bearing usage. Given the substantial radial loads these bearings endure, the outer ring must be robust enough to prevent raceway fractures caused by the intense forces generated during the rolling process.
